The state of Florida sends food to participating food banks, food pantries, soup kitchens and organizations such as the Salvation Army and other mass care organizations to feed those affected by a disaster.

Remember, during a disaster what’s good for you is good for your pet, so get them ready today. If you leave your pets behind, they may be lost, injured or worse. Never leave a pet chained outdoors. Plan options include:

• Create a buddy system in case you’re not home. Ask a trusted neighbor to check on your animals.


• Identify shelters. For public health reasons, many emergency shelters cannot accept pets.


• Find pet friendly hotels along your evacuation route and keep a list in your pet’s emergency kit.
• Locate boarding facilities or animal hospitals near your evacuation shelter.
• Consider an out-of-town friend or relative.


• Locate a veterinarian or animal hospital in the area where you may be seeking temporary shelter in case your pet needs medical care. Add the contact information to your emergency kit.

• Have your pet microchipped and make sure that you not only keep your address and phone number up-to-date, but that you also include contact info for an emergency contact outside of your immediate area.


• Call your local emergency management office, animal shelter or animal control office to get advice and information.


• If you are unable to return to your home right away, you may need to board your pet. Find out where pet boarding facilities are located.


• Most boarding kennels, veterinarians and animal shelters will need your pet's medical records to make sure all vaccinations are current.


• If you have no alternative but to leave your pet at home, there are some precautions you must take, but remember that leaving your pet at home alone can place your animal in great danger!

Florida Division of Emergency Management Latest Updates: Get the latest information on any state emergency activation, including evacuation zones, road closures, mobile access, shelters, contact information and more.

Emergency State Assistance Information Line: The State Assistance Information Line (SAIL) is a toll-free hotline activated at the time of an emergency to provide an additional resource for those in Florida to receive accurate and up-to-date information regarding an emergency or disaster situation impacting the State of Florida. The SAIL hotline is: 1-800-342-3557.

Florida SBDC Network: The Florida SBDC Network provides tools, training and resources to help small businesses grow and succeed including disaster preparedness, response and recovery. The Florida SBDC Network has more than 40 offices from Pensacola to Key West to serve the needs of Florida’s business community.

Disaster Business Damage Assessment Survey: Businesses that are damaged after a state-designated emergency can fill our the Damage Assessment Survey to provide information about the damage and connect with available resources. The information provided in this survey will be shared among various state and local agencies to expedite implementation of appropriate disaster relief programs for businesses.

Florida Small Business Emergency Bridge Loan Program: The purpose of the Emergency Bridge Loan Program is to provide a source of expedient cash flow to Florida small businesses impacted by a disaster.These short-term, interest-free working capital loans are intended to “bridge the gap” between the time a major catastrophe hits and when a business has secured longer term recovery resources, such as sufficient profits from a revived business, receipt of payments on insurance claims or federal disaster assistance.

Florida Department of Economic Opportunity Long-Term Recovery Resources: The mission of the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity's is to help communities achieve their long-term goals and grow their local economy after a disaster, when the recovery of a community can affect its ability to succeed for years to come. The agency is the state point of contact for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Block Grant- Disaster Recovery programs.

Disaster Unemployment Assistance: The purpose of Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) is to provide benefits and reemployment services to individuals who have become unemployed as a result of a major disaster.

Volunteer Florida: Volunteer Florida is the state’s lead agency for volunteers and donations before, during and after disasters. In partnership with the Florida Division of Emergency Management, Volunteer Florida coordinates with Florida Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) and local and state government emergency management agencies to meet volunteer and donation needs and mobilizes and deploys resources to assist communities responding to and recovering from disaster.
